College Roundup: Vanguard women’s volleyball moves on

SIOUX CITY, Iowa — The Lions’ added to their historic season by earning a 21-25, 25-12, 27-25, 22-25, 15-7 victory in the NAIA Tournament round of 16 on Friday at the Tyson Events Center.

The win propels Vanguard (25-6), which earned the program’s first Golden State Athletic Conference championship, into Saturday’s quarterfinals against Viterbro of Wisconsin (39-4) at 6 p.m. PDT.

Vanguard is the No. 7 seed. MidAmerica Nazarene (28-11) was the No. 10 seed. Vitebro is the No. 2 seed.

On Friday, senior middle blocker Sarah McKinney had 13 kills, hit .310 and amassed four solo blocks and six block assists to pace the Lions.

Senior outside hitter Charlotte Heerlyn had 12 kills and four block assists, while senior middle blocker Stephanie Flores, the GSAC Player of the Year, had 10 hills, hit ,.360, and posted four block assists and one solo stuff.

Junior setter Kelly Daylrmple had 23 assists and nine digs, while junior setter Rory McCloy had 21 assists and nine digs for the winners.

Freshman libero Rebecca Lowden had 20 digs and senior defensive specialist Kiana Nicio had 13 digs and a team-best three ace serves.

Vanguard hit .173 for the match, 86 points better than the Pioneers. Vanguard hit .313 in the decisive fifth set, in which the Kansas-based school hit negative .235.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

UC Irvine 70, Pacific 67

STOCKTON — The Anteaters rallied from 14 points down in the second half to earned the nonconference win Friday night.

Junior center Mamadou Ndiaye had 19 points and a career-high 14 rebounds. He scored what turned out to be the game-winning basket on a dunk off a Luke Nelson feed with 1:18 left to put the Anteaters up 68-67. Dominique Dunning scored the game’s final basket on a drive with 19 seconds remaining as Pacific missed a late three-point attempt.

Junior guard Jaron Martin added 16 points off the bench, including 10 in the final 6:30. Senior guard Alex Young had 11 points, six rebounds and four assists while senior forward Mike Best also scored 11 points, all in the first half, for the Anteaters (6-2).

The Tigers are 1-6.

The Anteaters outrebounded Pacific, 38-30, pulling down 14 offensive boards.

UCI plays at Saint Mary’s Sunday at 4 p.m.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

East Los Angeles 79, Orange Coast 72

CYPRESS — Megan Lewis had 15 points and Sami Little added 14 for the Pirates in the opening round of the Cypress tournament on Friday at Cypress College.

Michelle Wu and Chyann Pendergrass had six assists apiece for OCC (2-4), which plays in the the consolation semifinals on Saturday at 1 p.m.

East L.A. is 5-3.
