Football: Newport’s Kinder recognized in Sunset League
Newport Harbor High junior running back Cole Kinder highlights one of four Sailors making the All-Sunset League first team in football.
Also on the first team for the Sailors were Reed Rutter, a senior receiver and safety, and senior offensive linemen Elliott Frye and Max Spruill. Newport Harbor (4-6, 2-3 in league) took fourth in league, falling one spot short of advancing to the CIF Southern Section West Valley Division playoffs.
Frye and Spruill, a two-time first-team member, paved the way for Kinder, who rushed 221 times for 1,234 yards and nine touchdowns.
Kinder also had 12 receptions for 161 yards and a touchdown, and he returned a kickoff 95 yards for a touchdown.
Rutter finished with 39 catches for 542 yards and five touchdowns.
Rutter totaled 54 tackles.
The Sailors’ second-team picks were junior quarterback Michael Bonds, senior linebackers Max Durante and Dalton Rosene, senior tight end Kobe Benter, and junior defensive back Levi Hooper.
Edison’s Garrett White, a receiver and defensive back, was named the Sunset League MVP.
