Newport-Mesa Junior All-American Midget Seahawks to play in OCJAAF Super Bowl

The undefeated Newport-Mesa Junior All-American Midget Seahawks notched its 11th straight win, dispatching the Los Angeles Hurricanes, 33-24, to advance to Saturday’s Orange County Junior All-American Football Super Bowl.

The Seahawks, who have won 21 straight over the past two seasons, will defend their title against the Carson Colts Blue team at St. Paul High School in Santa Fe Springs at 8 p.m.

The Newport-Mesa boys have been spectacular this season, averaging over 25 points per game, while allowing just a little over seven points per game.

They held off the Hurricanes in this one, after the L.A. squad pulled to within, 26-24, with eight minutes left in the game.

The Hurricanes failed on a two-point conversion that would’ve tied the game.

However, quarterback General Booty directed a 55-yard touchdown drive and hit Mark Redman for a 12-yard TD with 5:29 left.

Anthony Davis later ended the game with an interception for the Seahawks defense in his own end zone.

Booty hit Redman for a 15-yard gain, then John Humphreys for a seven-yard completion, and Danny Hatch for 16 yards during the Seahawks’ final scoring drive.

Booty opened the scoring for the Seahawks with a rushing touchdown from two yards out to complete a nine-play, 65-yard drive. Jake Caldwell kicked the extra point for a 7-0 lead.

The Hurricanes answered with a seven-play, 61-yard scoring drive but failed on the extra point and trailed 7-6.

Booty retaliated with a 11-yard touchdown pass to Redman to cap a seven-play, 55-yard drive.

The scoring continued with the Hurricanes scoring on their first play from 56 yards out to draw within 14-12.

Back and forth it went, the Seahawks responded with a 13-play, 55-yard drive that ended with Adam Molloy’s three-yard touchdown run. Molloy racked up 29 rushing yards on four carries and Humphreys produced 27 yards on two receptions on the drive to help give Newport-Mesa a 20-12 lead.

But, the Seahawks wanted more before halftime. They forced a turnover on downs, as the Hurricanes’ incomplete pass fell with 71 seconds left from their own 36-yard line.

Molloy didn’t waste much time breaking several tackles on a 24-yard touchdown run with 34 seconds left before the half for a 26-12 lead.

Connor McDonald recorded an interception for the Seahawks defense as the second quarter ended.
