College Roundup: Vanguard women’s volleyball move past Coastal Georgia

SIOUX CITY, Iowa — The No. 6-ranked Lions rallied for a 23-25, 25-11, 25-21, 25-17 victory over the No. 22-ranked Mariners in the opening round of pool play at the NAIA Tournament on Tuesday.

Jessica Chase had 15 kills and hit .394 and Sarah McKinney added 13 kills and hit .476 to help the Lions (23-5), the No. 1 seed in the four-team pool, prevail.

McKinney was involved in four blocks, as were Stephanie Flores and Rachel Barker, both of whom chipped in nine kills.

Rory McCloy led the winners with 27 assists and added eight digs, while Kelly Dalrymple had 18 assists and 11 digs.

Rebecca Lowden had 22 digs and Amanda Sappington had a team-best four aces for Vanguard, which meets Southern Oregon in the second of three Pool F matches.

Coastal Geogia is 31-4.

ORANGE BEACH, Ala. — Sophomore midfielder Nicole Dunn scored in the 79th minute to erase a 2-1 deficit, but the No. 10-ranked Lions were bested in penalty kicks, 3-1, to suffer elimination Tuesday in the second round of the NAIA Tournament.

Senior Madison Farrel outran a defender and directed the ball low past a charging goalkeeper to put the Lions on top, 1-0, in the 18th minute, but No. 5-ranked William Carey answered in the 41st minute to create a 1-1 halftime tie, It was Farrel’s seventh goal in seven games.

William Carey scored in the 77th minute to take the lead and, after Dunn’s goal, the two teams played the remainder of regulation and two overtime periods without a goal to prompt penalty kicks.

Vanguard (15-5-2) missed its first three PK attempts and, after Farrel converted hers in the fourth round, Mississippi-based WCU (17-2-2) made the third of its four tries to advance in the game that will officially be recorded as a tie.

Vanguard posted a 21-10 advantage in shots and Lions goalkeeper Kaycee Smith made three saves.

MidAmerica Nazarene 2, Vanguard 0

DELRAY BEACH, Fla .— The No. 15-ranked Lions were outshot, 23-8, and were eliminated in the second round of the NAIA Tournament on Tuesday.

Kansas-based MidAmerica Nazarene, ranked No. 16, scored on a penalty kick in the 54th minute and tacked on in the 57th minute with a header to improve to 16-5-1 and advance.

Vanguard finishes 16-5.

Juan Arellano and Nahum Paz had two shots each to pace Vanguard, for which goalie Brandon Gomez made eight saves.
