College Roundup: UCI wins matchup featuring two 7-6 centers

UC Irvine 61, Central Florida 60 (OT)
ORLANDO — Mamadou Ndiaye was the center of attention, but Luke Nelson came away with a game-high 22 points to lead the Anteaters to the nonconference win featuring a matchup of two 7-foot-6 centers.
Ndiaye finished with five points, two rebounds and no blocks against Central Florida’s 7-6 center Tacko Fall, who had six points and four blocked shots. In addition, AJ Davis, who led Central Florida (0-2) with 19 points, dunked on Ndiaye in a highlight-reel-type play.
Ndiaye did score all three of the team’s three points in overtime.
Mike Best and Alex Young scored 10 points each for the Anteaters (3-0).
UCI has opened the season 3-0 for the first time since the 1982-83 squad won its first five games.

Cal State Northridge 72, Vanguard 52
NORTHRIDGE — The Lions suffered their first loss of the season in the nonconeference road game on Wednesday.
Senior guard Jaamon Echols had 16 points, including three three-pointers, for Vanguard (4-1). Junior forward Zach Allmon added 10 points and nine rebounds.
Vanguard shot just 18 of 61 from the field (29.5%). Northridge (2-2) was 30 of 59 from the field (50.8%).
Olalekan Ajayi and Micheal Warren each had 17 points for the winners.

WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL
Irvine Valley def. Orange Coast
Danyelle Brown had nine kills and 19 digs for the Pirates against the Orange Empire Conference champions who won 25-22, 25-21, 25-17 in the regular-season finale on Wednesday night inside the Peterson Gym.
Kaitlynn Biard added seven kills and 14 digs and etter Measha Lindstrand dished out 29 assists for the Pirates (13-10, 5-9 in conference).
The Lasers are 15-5, 12-2.
