Two-minute drill: CdM runs over Trabuco Hills
The Corona del Mar High football team got a bit of revenge as it began its quest for the CIF Southern Section Southwest Division title on Friday night.
The No. 3-seeded Sea Kings (9-2) got past Trabuco Hills, 42-17, in the first round of the playoffs at Jim Scott Stadium. Last year, it was Trabuco Hills that beat CdM in the quarterfinals. The Mustangs upset the top-seeded Sea Kings and did something that no other team has been able to do since 2011, beat CdM in a playoff game.
The Sea Kings were shut down on offense in that game, managing just 10 points. On Friday night, though, they had 634 yards of total offense, including six rushing plays that went for 20-plus yards.
Three of those came from senior quarterback Chase Garbers, who had a season-high 108 yards rushing on just five carries, including a 44-yard touchdown run. Jaydin Moses had 19 carries for 198 yards, and Peter Bush had four carries for 32 yards.
“It’s funny, we don’t give him enough credit with his feet ,” said CdM Coach Dan O’Shea of Garbers, who also passed for 284 yards, four touchdowns and an interception. “We don’t ask him to run too much, but it’s CIF playoff time. We’ve got to be able to have both of those guys [Garbers and Moses] run well for us, and we took advantage of some scheme things they were doing.”

•Corona del Mar got a bit sloppy at times, committing eight penalties. Three of those came in succession on the same drive in the third quarter. A holding, false start and clipping penalty put the Sea Kings in a tough second-and-29 situation on their own 21-yard line.
After a five-yard run by Moses made it third-and-24, Garbers aired it out. His longest completion of the night went to Jack Blower, who got himself wide open. Blower’s reception went for 46 yards.
Blower was one of four Sea Kings with at least three catches, hauling in four for 72 yards. Reece Perez had the most, seven, for 55 yards and a touchdown. Bush had six catches for 84 yards and a touchdown, and Taeveon Le had three catches for 35 yards.

•CdM did have the services of senior defensive lineman Joe Anderson in the game.
Anderson was originally expected to miss the Sea Kings’ playoff opener after being ejected from last week’s Pacific Coast League finale against Irvine. But O’Shea said the Sea Kings appealed the decision, and the one-game suspension was rescinded.
Anderson had a quarterback sack in Friday’s game.
“He’s exceptional,” O’Shea said of Anderson, who now has four quarterback sacks, second on the team to junior lineman Teddy Barber (5.5).
