College Roundup: OCC shuts out Golden West for big men’s soccer win

MEN’S SOCCER

Orange Coast 2, Golden West 0

Jack Slavik had one goal and one assist to lead the host Pirates in the Orange Empire Conference clash on Tuesday.

Slavik assisted Taylor Kane’s goal in the 46th minute and converted an assist from Costa Mesa High product Peter Marquez in the 82nd minute.

Ryan Brown had nine saves to record OCC’s sixth shutout.

The Pirates (9-9-1, 8-5 in conference) enter Friday’s regular-season finale at home against Fullerton trailing second-place Golden West (12-3-5, 8-2-3) by three points in the OEC standings.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

UConn 98, Vanguard 18

STORRS, Conn. — The visiting Lions missed 43 field-goal attempts and had 32 turnovers in the exhibition game against the defending NCAA champion Huskies on Sunday.

Samantha Doucette had seven points to lead the Lions, ranked No. 3 in the NAIA.

Vanguard was six for 49 from the field (12.2%) and one for 15 from three-point range (6.7%) and suffered a 47-28 rebounding deficit.

The game was played with a 24-second shot clock and a lager men’s basketball.

WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL

Biola def. Vanguard

LA MIRADA — The host No. 6-ranked Eagles posted a 25-11, 25-19, 25-19 sweep in Golden State Athletic Conference play on Tuesday.

The win will force the No. 4-ranked Lions, who have already clinched a share of their first GSAC title, to defeat visiting Hope International on Saturday to claim the crown outright.

Vanguard (21-5, 14-1 in conference) hit just .126 to see its 16-match win streak snapped.

Biola (25-3, 14-2) hit .407.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

Vanguard 83, Chapman 64

The host Lions got 28 points from Jaamon Echols and 20 from Malachi Hoosein in a nonconference clash Tuesday.

Echols was 11 for 17 from the field, including five for seven from three-point range, while Hoosein was seven for 12 and three for three from threedom.

The game counted for the Lions (2-0), but was an exhibition for the NCAA Division III Panthers.

WOMEN’S SOCCER

Orange Coast 0, Cypress 0

CYPRESS — The visiting Pirates missed a chance to pull even with the third-place Chargers in the Orange Empire Conference standings on Tuesday.

Odalis Elias had five saves to earn the shutout for OCC (10-5-4, 9-3-3 in conference).

Cypress is 14-3-2, 10-3-2.

Fourth-place OCC completes the regular season Friday against Norco at home at 1 p.m.

MEN’S WATER POLO

USC 14, UC Irvine 8

LOS ANGELES — Kyle Trush scored three goals and Lovre Milos added two for the visiting Anteaters in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation game on Sunday.

The No. 7-ranked Anteaters fell to 13-10, 2-6 in conference.

Newport Coast resident James Walters had two goals and Newport Beach resident Nick Silvers had one for No. 4-ranked USC (18-4, 6-2).

UCI completes the regular season on Friday at home against MPSF foe Pepperdine at 7 p.m.

WOMEN’S CROSS COUNTRY

Southern California regional

SAN DIEGO — Sophomore Janessa Reyes was 20th and Alyssa Allen was 21st to lead Orange Coast College to a seventh-place finish on Friday at Mission Bay Park.

OCC advances to the state championships on Saturday in Fresno.

Reyes completed the 5,000-meter course in 19 minutes, 50.3 seconds. Allen’s time was 19:52.7.

Golden State Athletic Conference Championships

ORANGE — Vanguard University freshman Keili Dorn finished 13th to top the Lions, who finished fifth in the nine-team field on Saturday at Irvine Park.

Dorn completed the 5,000-meter course in 19 minutes, 12.1 seconds to earn all-conference honors and qualify for the NAIA Championships, Nov. 21 in Charlotte, N.C.

MEN’S CROSS COUNTRY

Southern California regional

SAN DIEGO — Galyn Nash was 19th to lead Orange Coast College to a seventh-place finish on Friday at Mission Bay Park.

The Pirates advance to the state championships on Saturday in Fresno.

Nash completed the four-mile course in 21 minutes, 211.7 seconds.

Eamon Smythe (22nd in 21:25.8) and Danny Dominguez (22nd in 21:25.8) also cracked the top 30 for OCC.

Golden State Athletic Conference Championships

ORANGE — Vanguard University junior Jared Shohfi finished seventh and junior teammate Zach Hunt was eighth to lead the Lions to a fourth-place finish at the nine-team event on Saturday at Irvine Park.

Shohfi completed the 8,000-meter course in 26 minutes, 20.41 seconds, while Hunt’s time was 26:26.87.

Shofi and Hunt, as well as freshman Zach DeAtley (12th in 26:38.74) all earned all-conference honors and qualified for the NAIA Championships, Nov. 21 in Charlotte, N.C.

WOMEN’S GOLF

Southern California regional

SOLVANG — Orange Coast College freshman Emily Lewis shot had a 36-hole total of 165 in the two-day event completed Sunday at Alisal Golf Course.

Lewis advanced to the state championship, Sunday and Monday at the Morrow Bay Golf Course.
