College Roundup: Best leads UCI with 14 points in exhibition win over Vanguard

MEN’S BASKETBALL

UC Irvine 83, Vanguard 59

Mike Best led the Anteaters with 14 points in the exhibition game on Saturday.

Jaron Martin added 12 points, while Mamadou Ndiaye and Haroldas Saprykinas scored 10 points each for UCI.

Jaamon Echols led Vanguard with 11 points and Antonio Bishop added 10 points.

MEN’S SOCCER

Cal Poly SLO 1, UC irvine 0

SAN LUIS OBISPO — The visiting Anteaters’ season came to an end in the first round of the Big West Conference Tournament on Saturday.

Justin Dhillon scored in the fifth minute for the difference, though UCI posted a 17-4 shot advantage.

UCI finished 5-11-4.

Cal Poly is 11-3-5.

WOMEN’S SOCCER

Vanguard 3, San Diego Christian 0

Haley Bruce had two goals and Natalie DeVries had two assists for the No. 11-ranked host Lions in the first round of the Golden State Athletic Conference Tournament on Saturday.

Vanguard (14-4-1), the No. 3 seed, advances to Thursday’s semifinals to face No. 2-seeded Westmont at Biola at noon.

Vanguard and No. 8-ranked Westmont tied, 2-2, in their regular-season meeting on Oct. 17 in Santa Barbara.

Nicole Dunn had the other Vanguard goal on Saturday.

WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL

UC Irvine def. UC Santa Barbara

SANTA BARBARA — The Anteaters recorded 72 digs, the second-most this season in a 25-13, 23-25, 25-23, 25-23 big West Conference win Saturday night.

UCI (12-13 overall, 6-7 in conference) were led by Luna Tsujimoto’s match-high 21 digs. Chloe Hakim boosted the back-row efforts with a career-best 17digs. Shelley Anderson posted a season-best 12 digs to go along with 48 assists for a double-double while Sydney Wright chipped in a career-high eight digs to go along with 10 kills. Marisa Bubica led all players with a season-high 19 kills and hit .341 for the match while Victoria Dennis unleashed a .400 hitting percentage on the Gauchos, converting seven of 15 attempts with just one error.

Cal Poly SLO def. UC Irvine

SAN LUIS OBISPO — Harlee Kekauoha lead four Anteaters with double-figure kills with 18 in the 19-25, 25-19, 25-22, 22-25, 15-10 Big West Conference road loss on Friday.

Marisa Bubica had 15 kills, while Victoria Dennis had 12 and Ella Rosenfeld added 11.

UCI fell to 11-13, 5-7 in conference.

Cal Poly is 17-5, 9-2.

MEN’S WATER POLO

UC Irvine 11, San Jose State 3

Lovre Milos scored four goals to lead the host Anteaters in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation game on Saturday.

No. 7-ranked UCI is 13-9, 2-5 in conference.

San Jose State is 3-22, 0-8.
