Breakdown: Newport Harbor needs to upset Edison in the teams’ Sunset League finale to strengthen its case for one of two at-large berths into the CIF Southern Section West Valley Division playoffs … The Sailors come into Friday tied with Los Alamitos for the third and final guaranteed spot from the league, but the Griffins have the head-to-head tiebreaker and play last-place Marina in their final league game … Newport Harbor has made the playoffs for six straight years, and in 23 of Coach Jeff Brinkley’s 29 seasons overall … The Sailors, however, have not beaten Edison since 1979 … Newport Harbor is 0-9 against Edison since rejoining the Sunset League in 2006 … The Chargers, ranked No. 6 in the West Valley Division, clinched at least a share of the league title with last week’s 33-7 win over rival Fountain Valley … Edison, coached by Newport Beach resident Dave White, lost White’s son Garrett, a big-play receiver with eight touchdown catches, to a knee injury in the Fountain Valley game … Garrett White will not play against Newport Harbor and is the Chargers’ fifth senior starter lost to injury this year, a list that includes quarterback Grant Lowary … Newport Harbor is trying to avoid its first sub-.500 season since 2011.
