High School Roundup: CdM’s Abdulghany, Matsuoka advance to CIF SoCal Championship

GIRLS’ GOLF

CIF Southern Section Individual Champioinship

CHINO HILLS — Corona del Mar High junior Alyaa Abdulghany shot one-under-par 69 to finish third at the CIF Southern Section Invidiual Championship at Western Hills Country Club on Thursday.

Abdulghany, the defending champion, tied with Madie Chou of Foothill, but Abdulghany shot 33 on the back nine, two lower than Chou to secure third place.

CdM senior Amy Matsuoka finished seventh with a 72.

Abdulghany, the Pacific Coast League champion, and Matsuoka were among 28 of 144 who advanced to the CIF Southern California Championship at Goose Creek in Mira Loma on Nov. 12.

The CdM duo must finish in the top nine not on a competing team to advance to the CIF State Championship at Poppy Hills Golf Course, Pebble Beach on Nov. 17.

“The goal for them is to go to state,” CdM Coach Mike Starkweather said.

Newport Harbor High senior Grace Ferrell, the Sunset League champion, shot 78 and missed the cut by one shot to advance.

The CdM girls’ golf team finished tied for fifth at Western Hills in the WSCGA Team Qualfying Tournament, one spot from advancing.

Walnut won with 366 points ahead of Palm Desert (387 points), Mira Costa (388) and San Marino (392). CdM had 404.

Celine Niu and Gabby Finear both shot 82 and Gia Finear 99.

“They did really well,” Starkweather said of his team. “I was proud of them. They’ve come a long way this season. Hopefully Amy and Alyaaa reach the goal to make state finals.”

BOYS’ CROSS COUNTRY

Orange Coast League finals

ORANGE — Costa Mesa High junior Elliott Hachac finished second individually on Wednesday at Irvine Regional Park.

Hachac finished the three-mile course in 15 minutes, 20 seconds to qualify for the CIF Southern Section Division 3 preliminaries Nov. 14 in Riverside.

Costa Mesa placed fourth overall as a team. Myles Aguilar (19th, 16:46), Christian Pham (22nd, 16:58), Sebastian Chavez (23rd, 17:09) and Joseph Pena (24th, 17:16) also scored.

Estancia finished fifth as a team. The Eagles’ top finisher was Angel Hernandez, in 25th place in 17:20.

Godinez won the title.

GIRLS’ CROSS COUNTRY

Orange Coast League finals

ORANGE — Costa Mesa High placed third as a team on Wednesday at Irvine Regional Park, qualifying for the CIF Southern Section Division 3 preliminaries on Nov. 14 in Riverside.

Holly Reiland was fourth individually for the Mustangs in 18:37, followed by Bridget Devlin in 18th (20:07) and Gaby Perez in 19th (20:13). Cathy Pimentel (20th, 20:27) and Emily Olvera (22nd, 20:47) also scored for Mesa.

Estancia placed fifth as a team. The Eagles were paced by sophomore Dafne Garduno, in 17th place in 20:01.

Laguna Beach won the team title.

GIRLS’ VOLLEYBALL

Edison def. Newport Harbor

Remy Wilson had 16 kills for the Sailors, but the Chargers won, 25-20, 25-20, 24-26, 18-25, 15-9, in the Sunset League match on Wednesday.

Jaclyn Brown and Vivian Donovan had 13 kills each, and Ellie Hagadorn amassed 40 assists for Newport Harbor (12-18, 4-6 in league).
