CdM girls’ golf runner-up at CIF-SS tournament

The Corona del Mar High girls’ golf team, led by medalist Alyaa Abdulghany and Amy Matsuoka, finished runner-up at the CIF Southern Section Southern Division Team Championship at Lakewood Country Club on Monday.

CdM tied with La Serna for the top score, 391, but La Serna’s No. 6 golfer finished with a lower score than the Sea Kings’ sixth, 90-95.

CdM advances to the CIF Southern Section Team Qualifier for the CIF/WSCGA State Regional on Thursday at Western Hills Country Club in Chino Hills.

Newport Harbor, led by Grace Ferrell, finished 12th with 440.

Abdulghany, the Pacific Coast League champion, shot five-under-par 69. Matsuoka shot 72 to tie for third. Celine Niu (80), Gabby Finear (84), Gia Finear (86) and Sarah Reynoso (95) also competed.

Ferrell shot 73 to finish fifth. Tehya Corona (88), Nicole Nesbitt (89), Jackie DeFeo (93) and Madison Fernandez (97) also scored for Newport Harbor.
