College Roundup: Hiura shines in UCI win

UC Irvine 9, San Diego 2
SAN DIEGO — Keston Hiura homered and drove in three runs to lead the visiting Anteaters in the nonconference game Tuesday.
Hiura now has seven home runs and 25 RBIs this season as UCI improved to 15-7. He had seven homers last season en route to earning Big West Conference Freshman Field Player of the Year laurels.
Mitchell Holland hit his first home run of the year for UCI, for which John Brontsema was two for four with one RBI, one run and one stolen base.
Cameron Bishop, one of seven UCI pitchers, threw two shutout innings to earn the win, his fourth in five decisions this season.
USD, which had six hits and two errors, is 15-12.

San Diego Christian 6, Vanguard 4
Trai Patrick and Matt Harris both went one for three with two runs batted in to pace the host No. 17-ranked Lions in the nonconference game between Golden State Athletic Conference rivals on Tuesday.
Paul Keating was two for four and scored once for the Lions (23-9-1).
San Diego Christian is 17-12.
Vanguard opens a three-game GSAC series at Arizona Christian on Friday at 3 p.m.

Fullerton 8, Orange Coast 4
Daniel Hawkins went three for four with three runs batted in and one run to lead the host Pirates in the Orange Empire Conference game Tuesday.
James McLellan (one RBI), JT Navarro and Robert Teel all had two hits apiece for the OCC (11-11, 2-5 in conference), ranked No. 12 in Southern California.
The Hornets, ranked No, 1 in SoCal, are 19-3, 7-0.
OCC visits Fullerton on Thursday at 2 p.m.

SOFTBALL
Doubleheader
Host Vanguard University swept two nonconference games from William Woods on Tuesday.
The Lions earned a 2-1 victory in Game 1 and an 8-0 triumph in the second game.
Taylor Doyle pitched a six-inning complete-game shutout in Game 2 to improve to 9-6. She allowed six hits.
Payton Ross and Kristyn Whitley were both two for three with one run batted in and one run for the Lions, for whom eight players had hits and six drove in runs.
In the opener, Alexandra Olvera allowed four hits and no earned runs over seven innings to earn the win and help Vanguard improve to 12-19.
Taylor Wilson was three for three with one RBI in the opener.
William Woods is 23-16.

Cerritos 12, Orange Coast 4
NORWALK — Freshman catcher Anna Marin homered and drove in three runs for the visiting Pirates in the nonconference game Monday.
Marin now has five homers and 22 runs batted in, both of which lead the team. Her RBIs are more than double the next best OCC total (10).
Emma Silvestri was two for two with a run for OCC (6-16).
Cerritos is 20-7.

Anteater Invitational
LAGUNA NIGUEL — The host Anteaters finished second in the 54-hole, two-day event completed Tuesday at El Niguel Country Club.
UCI’s team total of 898 was seven shots behind champion Long Beach State.
Chris Parkinson (a tournament-best 13 birdies) and Jacob Schulze both shot seven-over-par 223 to tie for seventh to pace the Anteaters.
