College Roundup: UCI men’s volleyball earns big win against Pepperdine

UC Irvine def. Pepperdine
MALIBU – Tamir Hershko had 22 kills and a team-best 11 digs to lead the visiting Anteaters to a 25-18, 25-22, 28-30, 28-26, Mountain Pacific Sports Federation victory on Saturday.
Scott Stadick had 15 kills, hit .667 and added one solo block and three block assists for the winners (16-6, 10-5 in conference).
Thomas Hodges had 16 kills and Michael Saeta had 65 assists and three aces for UCI.
Pepperdine is 8-10, 6-9.
BASEBALL
Doubleheader
SANTA BARBARA – Visiting Vanguard University won the opener, 5-3, over Westmont, which won the second game, 6-1, in Golden State Athletic Conference play Saturday.
Brock Eissman hit a three-run home run and had four runs batted in for the No. 21-ranked Lions in Game 1.
Brandon Sandoval was two for four with two stolen bases and Chris Lumanlan allowed one earned run in six innings to improve to 6-1.
Eissman was two for three to pace a five-hit attack in the second game, in which Trai Patrick homered.
Vanguard is 20-15, 12-6 in conference.
Westmont is 17-12, 8-8.
SOFTBALL
Doubleheader
Host Vanguard University blanked visiting San Diego Christian twice to earn the Golden State Athletic Conference sweep Saturday.
Vanessa Dwyer allowed two hits in the 1-0 win in the opener. It’s her second straight shutout and she has now allowed three hits in her last 14 innings. She is 14-3.
Taylor Wilson was two for three and scored the winning run on a Payton Ross sacrifice fly.
In Game 2, Courtney Thornhill threw a seven-hit shutout in a 4-0 triumph.
Ross was three for four with two runs batted in and Cassie Balswick was two for two with one RBI and one stolen base.
No. 17-ranked Vanguard is 32-8, 11-3 in conference.
San Diego Christian is 16-15, 6-8.
