College Roundup: OCC baseball shuts out Desert
BASEBALL

Sophomore first baseman James McLelland went three for three with two doubles and three runs batted in to pace the host Pirates in the nonconference season opener Friday.
Freshman shortstop J.T. Navarro was three for three with one RBI, while freshman designated hitter Eric Wagaman was two for four with two RBIs for the Pirates, who outhit the visitors, 14-5.
Freshman John Balliet and sophomore Mondesi Gutierrez drove in two runs apiece.
Sophomore Casey Costello allowed two hits and struck out six in five innings to earn the win.
Nicko Cottone, Austin Moore, Sam Eggenburg and Ryan Randel each threw one inning of relief to preserve the shutout. Moore and Randel both struck out two.
OCC, the two-time defending state champion, visits Long Beach on Saturday at noon.

Vanguard 6, Marymount California 3
RANCHO PALOS VERDES — Senior shortstop Jose Rojas was three for five with one run batted in and two runs, while Brock Eissman and Trai Patrick were both two for five with one RBI for the visiting Lions in the nonconference game Friday.
Brandon Sandoval was two for five with one run for Vanguard, for which Alex Camacho pitched seven relief innings, allowing six hits and two earned runs.
Marymount is 2-2.
The two teams play a doubleheader at Vanguard on Saturday, beginning at 11 a.m.

MEN’S VOLLEYBALL
BYU def. UC Irvine
The host No. 9-ranked Anteaters were swept, 25-20, 25-23, 25-20, by the No. 3-ranked Cougars in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match Friday.
Senior Kyle Russell had 14 kills and two aces to pace the Anteaters (2-5, 1-4 in conference), who have lost three straight matches.
UCI junior Tamir Hershko had 10 kills, three aces and shared the team lead with six digs.
UCI hit .190 as a team, while BYU (5-2, 3-2) hit .403.
The two teams meet again today at 2 p.m. in the Bren Events Center.

MEN’S BASKETBALL
Cypress 82, Orange Coast 73
CYPRESS — The visiting Pirates shot 52% from the field and made half of their 10 three-point attempts in the Orange Empire Conference game Friday.
OCC (8-13, 3-4 in conference) lost its fourth straight game.
Aidan Ptasznik was five for five from the field on his way to 15 points to lead the Pirates, who received 13 points apiece from Jumoke Walker and Ibrahim Gerlach.
Gerlach was five for seven from the field and like Walker and Ptasznik made his only three-point attempt for OCC.
Jamaal Lee had eight points and 10 rebounds for OCC, which lost the battle on the glass, 31-21.
Cypress is 18-5, 5-2.

SOFTBALL
Doubleheader
Host Vanguard was swept to open its season Friday, falling to Cal State San Marcos, 5-3, in Game 1, then 7-5.
Sophomore second baseman Kaitlyn Estes was three for four with a solo home run for the Lions in the opener.
Freshman outfielder Amber Huffman went two for three with three runs batted in in the second game.
Vanguard senior pitcher Alexandra Olvera allowed one earned runs in four innings to absorb the loss in Game 1.

WOMEN’S INDOOR TRACK & FIELD
Washington Invitational
SEATTLE — Senior Paige Bushnell finished third in her section of the 200 meters to pace UC Irvine competitors on Friday.
Bushnell finished in 26.53 seconds.
UCI’s distance medley of Lauren Hall, Simone Buchanan, Hallie Pullum and Marisa Gonzalez finished 13th in 12 minutes, 37.74 seconds.
Competition continues Saturday.
