Orange County Breakers to play at Newport Beach Tennis Club

The Orange County Breakers of World Team Tennis, who are returning to Southern California this summer, announced Wednesday that they will play their home matches at the Newport Beach Tennis Club.

“We are thrilled that the Breakers have found an outdoor venue to call home at the Newport Beach Tennis Club,” Breakers General Manager Allen Hardison said in a release. “The Breakers have a long history in this city and Breakers Stadium at Newport Beach Tennis Club will offer tennis fans the perfect setting to watch world-class tennis.”

The venue will officially be named Breakers Stadium at the Newport Beach Tennis Club during the World Team Tennis regular season, which is scheduled for July 31-Aug. 13. The Breakers will play 12 regular-season matches, half of them at home.

The Breakers previously played at Palisades Tennis Club, and The Tennis Club Newport Beach, as the Newport Beach Breakers. They were renamed the Orange County Breakers and played two years at UC Irvine’s Bren Events Center, before moving to Texas and being re-branded as the Austin Aces following the 2013 season.

“Bringing the Breakers and Mylan World TeamTennis to the Newport Beach Tennis Club is something that we have been looking into the past few years,” Newport Beach Tennis Club Owner Steve Joyce said in the release. “Breakers matches will bring Newport Beach and Orange County residents access to some of the best tennis players on the tours. Our club is excited to be a part of that and play a role in bringing the Breakers and professional tennis back to Newport Beach.”

Newport Beach resident and former world No. 1 in doubles Rick Leach, who formerly played for the Breakers, is the Orange County Breakers coach. Leach is a longtime tennis pro at the Newport Beach Tennis Club. He will help select the Breakers’ 2016 lineup at the WTT Player Draft, scheduled for March 25 in Miami.

Breakers season tickets will go on sale to the general public on Feb. 3 at 10 a.m. Season tickets will start at $210, and all seating will be reserved. The team will also offer VIP tables above the stadium baseline that will include full food and beverage service. Individual match tickets will go on sale later this spring, the Breakers announced.
