College Roundup: Vanguard men upset Westmont
MEN’S BASKETBALL
Vanguard 73, Westmont 69
Junior Zach Allmon had 19 points and 14 rebounds to help the host Lions upset No. 15-ranked Westmont in a Golden State Athletic Conference game on Tuesday.
Brandon Brothers made four of five field-goal tries, including both three-point attempts, to produce 14 points for the Lions (13-6, 2-5), who had lost three in a row and four of their last five coming in.
Vanguard led, 38-27, at halftime and pushed the lead to 51-34, before the visitors (15-5, 4-3) rallied to claim a 65-62 edge with 3:18 left.
A layup by Vanguard guard Myles Smith put the hosts up, 71-69, with 27 seconds left and Allmon, who was eight for 15 from the field, netted two foul shots with six seconds remaining to finalize the scoring.
Vanguard plays host to The Master’s on Saturday at 7:30 p.m.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
UC Irvine 62, Cal State Fullerton 58
FULLERTON — Junior Mokun Fajemisin had 14 points and seven rebounds to lead the visiting Anteaters to their first Big West Conference win of the season on Saturday.
UCI (4-16, 1-5 in conference) snapped an 11-game losing streak by taking a 42-34 lead at the end of three quarters and holding on.
Junior Shereen Sutherland had 12 points and six rebounds, while senior Raelyn Cheung-Sutton had nine points, eight assists, three rebounds and three steals an no turnovers for UCI.
UCI forced 23 turnovers, 10 more than it committed to overcome a 43-33 rebounding deficit.
Fullerton fell to 2-17, 0-5.
UCI plays host to Cal State Northridge on Thursday at 7 p.m.

Stanford def. UC Irvine
STANFORD — The visiting No. 4-ranked Anteaters fell, 25-19, 15-25, 25-20, 26-24, to the No. 8-ranked Cardinal in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match on Saturday.
Junior outside hitter Tamir Hershko led UCI with 18 kills, while senior middle blocker Jason Agopian had a season-best 10 kills and a team-leading three blocks for UCI (2-4, 1-3 in conference).
Stanford is 5-1, 3-1.
UCI plays host to BYU In back-to-back matches Friday (7 p.m.) and Saturday (2 p.m.).

MEN’S TENNIS
UC Irvine 4, Old Dominion 0
WACO, Texas — Sabastian Heim won in singles and doubles to lead the Anteaters on the final day of the ITA Kickoff Classic on Sunday.
Heim posted a 7-6 (7-3), 6-2 victory at No. 1 singles, then teamed with Nico Mertens to post a 6-1 triumph at No. 3 doubles to help UCI earn the doubles point.
Tyler Pham (No. 3) and Vatsal Bajpai (No. 6) also completed singles victories for UCI (5-2).
ODU is 0-2.

MEN’S GOLF
Winter Intercollegiate
BEAUMONT, Calif. — UC Irvine sophomores David Kim and Johnny Hyun finished sixth and ninth, respectively, to help the Anteaters finish fifth in a 10-team field of the event concluded Tuesday at Oak Valley Golf Club.
Kim had a 54-hole score of 225, while Hyun shot 228 to help UCI post a team score of 917, 21 shots behind victorious UC Santa Barbara.
Senior Jacob Schulze was 12th at 229 to also stand out for UCI.
