Irvine Co. donates $20 million to Irvine school district to fund teachers
Representatives from the Newport Beach-based Irvine Co. surprised the Irvine Unified School District Monday with a $20-million donation that will allow the district to continue its enrichment programming.
The real estate company’s donation, presented in the form of a giant check, will help fund more than 30 art, music and science teachers at 24 Irvine Unified elementary schools for the next decade, according to a news release.
Monday’s ceremony at Portola Springs Elementary School included science experiments and performances by student musicians.
The Irvine Co.’s grant extends an earlier $10-million donation given in 2006.
“This gift from Irvine Co. allows us to continue an enrichment program that distinguishes Irvine schools nationally,” Supt. Terry Walker said in a statement. “This is vital, especially during the shift to Common Core and new science standards requiring substantially more hands-on instruction.”
Robin Leftwich, Irvine Co.’s vice president of community affairs, said the company “is pleased to continue its long-term commitment to Irvine Unified School District and the holistic education of its students. Enrichment is an integral part of exemplary student achievement and high standardized test scores, elevating Irvine Unified above every other district in the state.”
