A man brandished a handgun during a confrontation in a Costa Mesa neighborhood Sunday night, according to police.

The altercation began around 10:20 p.m. when a car stopped at the intersection of Joann and Maple streets, Costa Mesa police Sgt. Matt Selinske said.

An argument started between a group of people standing on the corner and two men in the car, Selinske said.

Police said they aren’t sure what the altercation was about, but it ended when one of the men in the car brandished a semiautomatic handgun before the car sped off.

Police described the car as a small dark-colored Honda, likely a Civic made in the early 2000s. No description was available of the men inside.
