Around Town: Corgis hit the beach Saturday in H.B.
It’s corgi beach party time again in Huntington Beach.
From 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, short-legged, fox-faced dogs from around the country and even the world will descend on Huntington Dog Beach with their owners for the fall So Cal Corgi Beach Day.
So Cal Corgi Nation, a group of corgi enthusiasts, presents three free beach days per year. The spring party was held in April in Huntington Beach.
Saturday’s fall event will include a Howl-O-Ween costume contest.

Laguna Canyon Foundation receives $50,000 grant for field trips
The Annenberg Foundation awarded the Laguna Canyon Foundation a $50,000 grant to provide free outdoor educational field trips and bus transportation for students from low-income families.
The Laguna Canyon Foundation, which helps preserve and protect Laguna Coast and Aliso and Wood Canyons wilderness parks, spotlighted its South Coast Wilderness Education Program in the grant application.
The program serves students in some of Orange County’s Title I schools, which are eligible to receive federal funding due to their high percentages of students from low-income families.
The grant will enable the foundation to take about 5,000 students into the parks this school year, Executive Director Hallie Jones said in a statement.
Friendship Shelter gala set for Nov. 5
The Laguna Beach-based Friendship Shelter will hold its annual gala, themed “In Our Backyard,” on Nov. 5 at the Laguna Cliffs Marriott Resort & Spa in Dana Point.
The organization will honor three people and one business for their roles in fighting homelessness: Orange County Board of Supervisors Chairwoman Lisa Bartlett, psychologist John Becknell, Friendship Shelter Associate Executive Director Mark Miller and Zinc Cafe & Market, which has locations in Laguna Beach, Corona del Mar and Los Angeles.
The gala will include live and silent auctions, dining and live entertainment by Lee Rocker of the band Stray Cats. Tickets are available at friendshipshelter.org or (949) 494-6928.
Emergency response team registration open in Laguna
Registration is open for the Laguna Beach Police Department’s annual Community Emergency Response Team training.
The team consists of volunteers trained to assist during and after a disaster. Course topics will include disaster preparedness, fire safety, light search and rescue, disaster psychology, traffic control and scene management.
The free classes will meet from 9 a.m. to noon Mondays and Wednesdays from Jan. 9 through Feb. 1 at the Laguna Beach Community & Susi Q Center, 380 Third St.
Applicants must live or work in Laguna Beach and be 16 or older with no felony convictions. Applications must be submitted online and are available at lagunabeachcity.net/cityhall/community/default.htm.
Boys & Girls Club in Huntington Beach receives 3,000 donated items
The Assistance League of Huntington Beach and other community members donated thousands of items to the Boys & Girls Clubs of Huntington Valley’s Pacific Life Foundation branch last week.
In celebration of Make a Difference Day, the Assistance League donated 3,000 books, videos and CDs to the Boys & Girls Clubs branch.
