Corona del Mar Today: Firefighters seek donations for San Bernardino victim
Every holiday season for the past 10 years, the Newport Beach Firefighter’s Assn. has adopted a local family that needs help. This year, according to a city news release, the group is providing gifts and other assistance for the family of a victim of the Dec. 2 terrorist shooting in San Bernardino.
Mike Wetzel was shot and killed during the attack, according to a fundraising webpage. He is survived by his wife, Renee, and six children. He was the family’s sole provider.
“Although the Wetzel family are not Newport Beach residents, they are the most deserving family we have ever come across,” the webpage states. “Every dollar raised goes to Renee and her six children.”
The association’s Fire Santa Program has raised almost $21,000 toward a goal of $50,000, according to its fundraising web page. To make a contribution, visit: https://www.youcaring.com/renee-wetzel-and-her-six-children-484812#.
