Costa Mesa will experience an isolated winter snowfall Saturday during the grand opening of Snoopy House on City Hall’s lawn.

The annual holiday tradition of “Peanuts”-themed displays, now in its 48th year, runs nightly from 5:30 to 9 p.m. through Dec. 23. Admission is free.

Highlighting Saturday will be 10 tons of snow shipped in for fun. Another 10 tons is scheduled for delivery on Dec. 19, barring disruptive weather conditions, city officials said.

“Snow is definitely a rarity here in sunny Southern California,” Mayor Steve Mensinger said in a statement. “So we are happy to do our part to add a nice winter touch to our annual Snoopy House display for the enjoyment of children and families.”

Saturday’s festivities also include a formal presentation with city officials, starting at 5:30 p.m.

Each night, youth nonprofit groups will have fundraising booths at Snoopy House. Santa will also be on hand for photos.

Snoopy House started in 1966 at the Eastside Costa Mesa home of Jim and Linda Jordan. It was brought to City Hall in 2011.

The displays attract an estimated 80,000 visitors each year.
