Car travels down street while straddling the median; driver gets a DUI arrest
A man who drove his car down Wilson Street while it straddled the center divider Sunday night was arrested on suspicion of drunk driving, Costa Mesa police said.
“One set of tires on the westbound side, one set of tires on the eastbound side,” police Sgt. Dan Miles said.
According to police, Costa Mesa resident Bruce Hackwith, 53, was driving north on Harbor Boulevard and turned right onto eastbound Wilson Street about 8:20 p.m. Sunday.
That’s where Hackwith’s car began straddling the median, police said.
Hackwith drove that way long enough to take out a traffic sign before swerving back into eastbound lanes and hitting the curb, Miles said.
A witness told officers who arrived at the scene that Hackwith had walked away from the car and pointed him out to police, Miles said.
Police arrested Hackwith on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol.
He’s being held in Orange County Jail in lieu of $10,000 bail, according to jail records.
No one was hurt, and no other vehicles were involved, police said.
