Boy, 9, dies after being hit by a van while riding his bike in Irvine

A 9-year-old boy was hit and killed by a van while riding his bicycle Friday afternoon in an east Irvine neighborhood, police said.

The boy was biking at the intersection of Roosevelt and Bay Tree just after 3 p.m. when he was struck by the van, according to police.

Irvine police and the Orange County Fire Authority took the boy to a local hospital where he died a half hour later. The boy’s name was not released pending notification of his family.

The 57-year-old driver remained at the scene with investigators, but is not being identified. Police are still investigating the cause of the accident.

As of Friday afternoon, the intersection at Roosevelt and Bay Tree was partially closed for the investigation with limited lanes open to allow residents access to their homes, police said.
