Teachers burn up the dance floor for CdM event
From the rhythms of jazz to the beats of hip hop, the staff of Corona del Mar Middle and High schools brought their best moves to the fourth annual Dancing with the Teachers event.
Twelve teachers, high school Principal Kathy Scott and former CdM teacher Dave Sizer teamed up with members of the school’s dance team — Orchesis — for their routines.
They performed for a full house Thursday night at the high school’s big gym.
“It’s really important for me and the girls to build community, so we brought together the teachers and the students for something really positive,” Orchesis director Cami Marseilles said. “It’s a chance to see the teachers have fun outside the classrooms and to promote school spirit.”
Marseilles was part of the judging panel for Thursday’s dance performances. Audience members could also submit votes for their favorite team.
After the dancers gave their all on the floor, two teachers each took home a mirror ball trophy.
Spanish teacher Elisa Ramirez took the title for the night’s fan choice while Nelson Rojas, also a Spanish teacher, was honored with the judges’ choice.
This was Rojas’ second year dancing in the event.
“The first time was a lot of fun, so I wanted to do it again,” Rojas said. “And the girls are amazing. They’re professional, studious and they love what they do.”
Ramirez has participated in Dancing with the Teachers each year since the event started at the school.
“It’s a chance to work with students in a different environment,” Ramirez said. “You can be silly, funny and just have a good time.
Each year, the funds raised from the event go toward the school’s dance program.
