Irvine man convicted of murdering his wife over her affair

A jury Tuesday convicted an Irvine man of first-degree murder for strangling his wife to death in 2012 after he discovered she was having an affair.

Shalabh Rastogi, 42, faces a possible prison term of 25 years to life at his sentencing Jan. 8 in Orange County Superior Court.

Rastogi killed his wife, Jalina George, 40, during an argument about their marital troubles, according to prosecutors.

In April 2012, Rastogi became suspicious after discovering that George was taking birth control medication although he’d had a vasectomy years earlier, according to a grand jury indictment.

George at first denied the affair but eventually admitted it after Rastogi followed her by tracking her iPhone and then watched her meet with another man, according to court documents.

The couple were fighting in their Irvine apartment the night of May 21, 2012, when Rastogi grabbed George’s throat, prosecutors said. Rastogi told police he “snapped” and began strangling her, according to court documents.

Later that night, Rastogi called police and said he had killed his wife, the indictment states.

Rastogi and George had been married 14 years. Their three children were at theater practice during the murder, according to court documents.
