Pedestrian dies from injuries after being hit by a car in Costa Mesa

A 22-year-old Riverside man has died from injuries he suffered when a car struck him while he was crossing a Costa Mesa street Saturday night, according to police.

Sudi Nsengiyumva was leaving the Costa Mesa Courtyards shopping center in the 1800 block of Newport Boulevard when a 2007 Toyota Corolla traveling north on Newport Boulevard hit him, police said.

“The pedestrian was outside of any designated crosswalk area, and the Corolla was reportedly traveling at a normal rate of speed,” police said at the time.

Paramedics took him to Orange County Global Medical Center in Santa Ana for treatment of a traumatic brain injury and a spinal fracture, police said. Authorities at the hospital pronounced him dead at 12:05 p.m. Wednesday.

Officers interviewed the 61-year-old woman driving the Corolla on Saturday and released her at the scene. Police said she was cooperative and did not show signs of impairment.
