Pedestrian seriously hurt when hit by car in Costa Mesa
A 22-year-old Riverside man was hospitalized in critical condition after a car struck him while he was crossing a Costa Mesa street Saturday night, police said.
The man was leaving the Costa Mesa Courtyards shopping center in the 1800 block of Newport Boulevard when a 2007 Toyota Corolla traveling north on Newport hit him, police said.
“The pedestrian was outside of any designated crosswalk area, and the Corolla was reportedly traveling at a normal rate of speed,” police said in a news release.
Paramedics took the man to Orange County Global Medical Center in Santa Ana for treatment of a traumatic brain injury and a spinal fracture, police said.
Officers interviewed the 61-year-old woman driving the Corolla and released her at the scene. Police said she was cooperative and did not show signs of impairment.
