A Westminster woman was arrested on suspicion of drunk driving after her car smashed into a wooden light pole early Monday in Costa Mesa, according to police.

The four-door Toyota crashed into the pole on Newport Boulevard just south of 22nd Street about 1:10 a.m., Costa Mesa police Sgt. Dan Miles said.

The impact caused major damage to the front of the car and minor damage to the pole, according to Miles.

As a precaution, crews took the driver to Orange County Global Medical Center in Santa Ana, though she didn’t seem to be in pain, police said. No one else was in the car or was involved in the crash, Miles said.

At the hospital, officers determined that the woman was drunk and arrested her on suspicion of driving under the influence, according to police.

Authorities identified her as Julia Zhu, 24.

She was allowed to stay in the hospital while police worked on their investigation, Miles said.
