A Costa Mesa resident was beaten unconscious on a sidewalk Friday night when three males jumped him near the intersection of Baker Street and Jeffrey Drive, police said.

The assault started at about 10:30 p.m. with the group punching and kicking the victim, Costa Mesa police Sgt. Matt Selinske said. The attackers did not use weapons, he added.

The victim suffered a head injury and was taken to a hospital in critical condition, Selinske said.

Police Lt. Greg Scott said Tuesday that the victim’s condition is stable.

Police said they don’t know why the attack occurred or whether the attackers knew the victim. Witnesses were too far away to get a good look at what happened, Selinske said.

Scott said the investigation is continuing.
