Man, 81, seriously hurt when hit by van in Costa Mesa
An 81-year-old man was seriously injured when he was struck by a vehicle Friday morning while crossing Fairview Road in Costa Mesa.
The pedestrian, who is from Santa Ana, was crossing the northbound lanes of Fairview just south of Baker Street when he was hit by a van. Costa Mesa police and fire officials responded to the scene shortly after 6 a.m.
Investigators closed the two northbound lanes of Fairview Road. They will be reopened around noon, authorities said.
The man’s head struck the van’s windshield before he fell onto the roadway. He was not in a crosswalk when he was hit, police said.
Paramedics took the man to Orange County Global Medical Center in Santa Ana, where he is being treated for a broken right shoulder, broken right knee and broken left leg, police said. He also is being examined for a possible skull fracture and potential brain trauma, police said.
The 52-year-old driver of the van did not appear to be impaired and cooperated with investigators before being released, police said.
Anyone with information about the case is asked to call Traffic Investigator Darren Wood at (714) 754-5264.
