Bicyclist suffers head injury in Newport Beach

A bicyclist was hospitalized after crashing near a busy intersection in Newport Beach Thursday morning, police said.

Authorities at first thought a car and bike had collided at Jamboree Road and San Joaquin Hills Road about 10:30 a.m. but quickly determined that a car wasn’t involved, Newport Beach police spokeswoman Jennifer Manzella said.

Police now believe the bicyclist suffered a medical emergency and fell from his bike, injuring his head, Manzella said.

Medics transported the rider to a local hospital, Manzella said.

Police originally advised motorists to avoid the area, citing a major crash, but later said traffic was moving freely in the area by 11:30 a.m.
