Mailbag: Another fine photo by Pilot photographer Don Leach
I realize sports is rich in photo opportunities. But Don Leach’s photo of the Mustangs’ bench is outstanding! I think this photo alone is worthy of another award for Don. We are lucky to have him.

Photograph showed players’ reaction
The photo in Thursday’s Daily Pilot by Don Leach was great! It shows the players on Costa Mesa’s bench reacting when a last-second shot upset Laguna Beach. The exuberance and excitement by the reserve players, many who rarely see the floor, epitomizes the joy of high school sports.

Challenges in Newport-Mesa
Well, it looks to me that the Newport-Mesa school board members will have to circle the wagons again.
You would have thought after the Jeffrey Hubbard debacle they would have learned, but it is clear they did not. (Editor’s note: Hubbard is a former superintendent who was terminated after he was convicted of charges related to his work in another district; the charges were later overturned.)
They are again called on the carpet for giving Assistant Superintendent Paul Reed funds in a personal bank account to encourage him not to retire (“District pays into deputy superintendent’s separate retirement fund,” Jan. 20) and they allegedly did not investigate complaints by two former employees (“Former Newport-Mesa officials sue school district, superintendent,” Jan. 29).
What gives here?
