Dries makes national travel roster
Laguna Beach’s Annika Dries has been selected to the USA Women’s Senior National Team travel roster for the 2010 FINA World Cup. The tournament will run Aug. 17 to 22 in Christchurch, New Zealand.
Dries is one of 14 players to be making the trip. Only 13 players will be selected for the World Cup event. The travel team will train in Hawaii and play in a pre-World Cup tournament in Sydney, Australia, before heading to New Zealand.
Team USA will open World Cup play Aug. 17 against Russia. USA finished fourth in the last World Cup held in 2006 in Tianjin, China. Dries, a 2009 graduate of Laguna Beach High, was a member of the Senior National Tam that won the gold medal earlier this month at the FINA World League Super Final in La Jolla.
Hoops camps to begin in Laguna Beach
Laguna Beach High boys’ basketball Coach Bret Fleming has two summer hoops camps set to open. Starting Monday, Fleming will head a camp for junior high school-age youth at the Laguna Beach High gym. The camp is from 10 a.m. to noon daily through July 30.
A second camp, aimed at youth in grades second through fifth, starts Aug. 2. Camp sessions are from 9 to 11 a.m. daily through Aug. 6. The two-hour camps will teach skill development and place campers in a variety of game situations. The camps will be staffed by Laguna Beach High coaches and past and present Breakers players. Scott/Youngs finish second in Hermosa
Former Laguna Beach High athlete Rachel Scott and playing partner Elaine Youngs (El Toro High) finished second Sunday at the Assn. of Volleyball Professionals NIVEA Tour Hermosa Beach Open, presented by Bud Light Lime.
Scott — formerly Wacholder — and Youngs, the No. 3 seed in the women’s tournament, fell, 21-17, 21-14, to the top-seeded team of Jennifer Kessy (Dana Hills High) and April Ross (Newport Harbor High).
It was the fourth straight tournament title for Kessy and Ross on the current AVP tour. Scott and Youngs also fell to Kessy and Ross in the previous women’s final June 27 at the Belmar Open in New Jersey. The AVP NIVEA tour stays in the southland with the Long Beach Open, which begins today and runs through Sunday.
Tennis instruction continues Monday
The next session offered by Laguna Beach Tennis begins Monday. The session runs daily through Thursday. Future sessions are Aug. 2-5, Aug. 9-12 and Aug. 16-19.
Quick Start Tennis is designed to bring youngsters into the game and is divided into two different levels, ages 8-and-under and 10-and-under. The next level is the Junior Performance Team that is open to youth ages nine to 13.
The High Performance Coed Tennis Camp is designed for boys’ and girls’ varsity and junior varsity high school players. The camp includes On Court and Off Court training. A tournament will be held at the end of each month during the summer. The cost for the High Performance Coed Tennis Camp is $200 per weekly session. Class sessions run from 7 to 10 a.m. Monday through Thursday. The cost for both Quick Start Tennis and Junior Performance Tennis is $120 per weekly session. Class sessions run from 10 a.m. to noon Monday through Thursday.
