Briefs: Jock eighth at trials

Charles Jock, a recent UC Irvine graduate, finished eighth in the eight-man field of the 800 meters at the U.S. Track and Field Olympic Trials at the University of Oregon on Monday and did not qualify for the team that will compete in London.

Jock, a three-time All-American and Big West Conference Track Athlete of the Year, finished in 1 minute, 49.02 seconds, nearly five seconds off the pace of the third and final qualifier.

Nicholas Symmonds won the final (1:43.92), followed by Khadevis Robinson (1:44.64) and Duane Solomon Jr. (1:44.65).

Sailors’ Hufford third

Newport Harbor High incoming junior Ramsey Hufford finished third at the National Youth Weightlifting Championships in the 16- and 17-year-old division with a combined weight of 256 kilograms (564 pounds) on Sunday in Dearborn, Mich.

Hufford, a 6-foot-4, 301-pound offensive lineman for the Sailors last season as a sophomore, also won the award for best technique at the event.

He snatched 110 kilos (242 pounds) and his clean and jerk was 146 kilos (321).

UCI All-Americans

UC Irvine’s Jessy Cardey and Danielle Warde, a junior and sophomore, respectively, for the 2012 women’s water polo team, have been named second-team All-American by the Assn. of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches.

Cardey, a two-time Big West Conference Player of the Year, scored 66 goals to help the Anteaters win the conference title and finish fourth in the NCAA Tournament. She received honorable mention in All-American voting as a freshman and a sophomore.

Warde, a two-time first-team All-Big West performer, posted 36 goals, 64 steals and 34 assists for Coach Dan Klatt’s squad, which finished 25-8.

Warde received honorable mention in the All-American voting as a freshman.

Katie Croghan, a senior last season at UCI, received honorable mention in the All-American voting.

UCI teams lauded

UC Irvine men’s and women’s track and field programs both received the 2012 Big West Conference Spring Sportsmanship Awards.

The award is voted on by the respective student-athletes in each of the big West’s 16 championship sports. Each participating student-athlete selects the school that demonstrates excellent conduct in competition and is most deserving of the award. Winning teams are honored with commemorative T-shirts.
