Youth Sports: Pirates come back to beat Angels in Little League game
The Pirates spotted the Angels the early lead Monday in their Majors Division game at Ocean View Little League but came back to record a 7-5 victory.
The Pirates rattled off four doubles during a six-run second inning for the comeback win. Joshua Ocampo (RBI single), Alden Landis (two-run triple) and Michael Austin (RBI single) staked the Angels to 4-0 lead in the first. The Pirates, however, responded with their biggest inning of the season. Danny Gallardo (two for three) got the Pirates on the scoreboard with a run-scoring double and Lucas Flynn followed with a two-run double to center field. Nick Madole lined a double to left to put the Pirates ahead and Owen Wessel doubled in Madole for a 6-4 lead.
Wessel , the Pirates’ starting pitcher, settled down after the first inning, allowing one run over his final four innings of work. Gavin Kells worked a clean sixth for the save. Wessel and Kells combined to retire the final 11 batters in a row as the Pirates (5-2) won their fourth straight game.
The Pirates picked up an insurance run in the fifth when Gallardo beat out an infield hit to score Evan Knipe.
Ocampo (two RBIs), Micah Blake (two for two) and Ryan Carles (double) paced the Angels’ attack.

Pirates 8, Indians 7: Shortstop Nick Madole went two for three with two runs scored and made two big plays in the field to help the Pirates hold off the Indians Sunday.
Madole scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the fifth to give his team an 8-6 lead and Owen Wessel pitched the sixth to pick up the save.
Payton Valentine led the Indians with a four-RBIs day which included a two-run double in the first inning and a score-tying, two-run single in the third.
Evan Knipe (two for three) and David Drigla contributed RBI singles during a four-run first inning for the Pirates, erasing a 2-0 deficit. After Valentine tied the score at 4-4, A.J. Hurtado put the Pirates back in front with a sharp single to left in the third, scoring Knipe. Gavin Kells made it 6-4 with an RBI groundout.
Jimmy Legg and Connor Stephens collected RBI ground outs for the Indians, and Jack Clark (double, walk) scored twice.
Quentin Custodio and Nick Lawrence had long singles for the Pirates, while teammates Danny Gallardo and Christian Claypool each drove in a run.

Royals 5, Brewers 1: AJ Valle struck out nine in the first four innings Saturday to help get the Royals past the Brewers. Valle didn’t allow a walk or earned run in that time and his Brewers counterpart, Brandon Wood, gave a solid performance for the Royals.
The Brewers scored first but the Royals rallied for the win. Alec Muirhead hit a home run in the fifth inning, and hits by Jacob George, Dylan Simonds and a RBI double from Jake Alvarez (RBI double) keyed the win.

Pirates 6, Royals 5 (seven innings): After the Royals made a furious rally from a 5-0 deficit to force extra innings, the Pirates pulled out the win when Owen Wessel singled to drive in Nick Madole in the top of the seventh.
With two outs in the seventh, Madole (three for three, two doubles, three runs) nearly homered but his drive to center field struck the top of the fence. Wessel followed with a liner to center for the go-ahead run. The Royals didn’t go quietly in the bottom of the seventh, loading the bases with two outs before Wessel retired the final batter on a grounder to first.
The Royals parlayed four hits and a walk into a four-run rally in the fifth. Adam Baggetta closed the gap to 5-3 with a double to right-center field and Nate Skorheim tied the score with a dramatic two-out, two-run single.
A.J. Hurtado helped the Pirates build their 5-0 lead with a two-run single in the first and an RBI single in the second. Hurtado also was a force on the mound with nine strikeouts in 3 1/3 innings.
Samuel Mejia (three for three), Nick Skorheim (two for three) and Dylan Simonds (two for three) had multi-hit games for the Royals who racked up 14 hits. Reliever Alec Muirhead pitched brilliantly to keep the Royals close, allowing no runs in 3 1/3 innings.
David Drigla contributed an RBI infield single for the Pirates who also received singles from Gavin Kells and Quentin Custodio.

Ice Hockey
The Anaheim Jr. Ducks Bantam AAA team, which includes Andrew DeCarlo, 14, of Huntington Beach, went 2-2 at the 2015 Toyota-Hockey Youth Tier 1 14-Under National Championship. The tournament, which started March 26, ended Monday. The Youth Tier 1 14U tourney was played at the Northtown Center at Amherst, N.Y.
Anaheim opened tourney play March 25 with a 3-1 victory over Boston Jr. Eagles (Massachusetts). The Jr. Ducks lost in two overtimes Friday to Shattuck-St. Mary’s (Minnesota), 4-3, defeated Dallas Stars Elite (Texas) Saturday, 4-3, and lost Sunday to Compuware (Michigan), 2-1. DeCarlo had an assist in both the Shattuck-St. Mary’s and Dallas Stars Elite games.
Detroit HoneyBaked Hockey Club (Michigan) defeated Chicago Mission (Illinois), 2-1, in double-overtime Monday to win the 14U title.
