Briefs: Local tennis player helps team capture title
Art Hernandez of Huntington Beach was part of the four-member USA men’s 45 and over division team that won the Dubler Cup Saturday at the 2014 International Tennis Federation’s Seniors World Team Championships at Boca Raton, Fla.
Twenty-three countries, divided into eight groups, vied for the Dubler Cup title. The USA defeated Russia, India, Argentina, Germany and in Saturday’s final, defeated France. Hernandez, 48, played doubles with Mario Tabares (Miami, Fla.) and was 4-1 and won the decider against France Saturday.
The USA lost to France in last year’s Dubler Cup final.
Other USA team members included Oren Motevassel (San Jose) and Jeff Tarango (Manhattan Beach) who played singles. The team was determined by the United States Tennis Assn. based on each players’ tournament results from the previous year.
The six-day tournament, which started April 21, had a format consisting of two singles and one doubles match.
Hernandez, a former standout at UC Irvine, has won several senior titles and is a multiple doubles champion at the Huntington Beach Open.
