High School Roundup: NHHS boys’ volleyball suffers upset to FVHS

BOYS’ VOLLEYBALL

Fountain Valley def. Newport Harbor

FOUNTAIN VALLEY — The Sailors suffered a Sunset League upset to the Barons, who won, 21-25, 25-19, 18-25, 25-22, 15-11, Tuesday.

Newport Harbor (9-17, 4-4 in league) now must win its final two matches of the regular season to reach the CIF Southern Section playoffs. If the Sailors split, they will most likely need to compete in a league-playoff match to qualify.

Newport Harbor plays at Los Alamitos on Thursday, and then at home on Tuesday for senior night against Marina. The Sailors swept Los Al in the first round of league play and beat the Vikings in five.

Against Fountain Valley, Wyatt Walton led with 16 kills. Clay Car (12 kills), Grady Kimme (14 kills, three blocks), Landon Monroe (51 assists) and Nic Sargeant (14 digs) also contributed.

Battle of the bay is Friday. If we win both matches we are sole second. If lose one of the two we could be out. BOTB is at Newport

BASEBALL

Beckman 6, Corona del Mar 1

Tyler Duncan was two for three with a run batted in for the Sea Kings in the Pacific Coast League game Tuesday.

Nolan McCarthy was three for three with a double for CdM (4-6 in league), which plays host to Beckman Friday at 3:30 p.m.

BOYS’ GOLF

Estancia 204, Laguna Beach 213

Parker Ohland shot three-over-par 38 and Davon Ortiz 39 to help lead the Eagles past the Breakers in a key Orange Coast League match Tuesday at Costa Mesa Country Club’s Mesa Linda course.

Gunnar Johnston (40), Brad Ehrhorn (43) and Jaime Ramirez (44) also scored for Estancia (9-8, 6-2 in league), which is second place in league.

Estancia must beat Calvary Chapel Thursday at Mesa Verde Country Club to share the league title with Calvary.

Los Alamitos 194, Newport Harbor 200

SEAL BEACH – Brad Tapfer shot one-over-par 37 to lead the Sailors in the Sunset League match Tuesday at Old Ranch Country Club Tuesday.

Mason Moody (39), Thomas Terry (40), Landon Knight (42) and Danny Willett (42) also scored for Newport Harbor (5-9, 0-9 in league), which finishes the season Thursday against Marina at Big Canyon Country Club.

BOYS’ TENNIS

Fountain Valley 12, Newport Harbor 6

FOUNTAIN VALLEY — Junior Reese Stalder, playing No. 1 singles, won his three sets for the Sailors in a Sunset League match on Tuesday.

Stalder improved 33-0 in singles sets.

The top doubles team of Sean Perrier and Garrett Byers won a tiebreaker set for Newport Harbor (12-4, 5-3 in league). The duo is now 39-8.

The Sailors play host to Laguna Beach on Wednesday at 3 p.m.

University 17, Corona del Mar 1

Tyler Gaede and Samee Aboubakare scored the lone set win in doubles for CdM in Tuesday’s Pacific Coast League match at home.

CdM, ranked No. 4 in CIF Southern Section Division 1, fell to 13-4, 6-2 in league. University is top-ranked in Division 1.
