College Roundup: UCI falls in five to Stanford

PALO ALTO — The NCAA defending champion Anteaters fell in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation quarterfinals, 28-30, 25-22, 25-15, 17-25, 15-13, Saturday at Stanford.
Zack La Cavera led UCI (18-11) with 19 kills and Jeremy Dejno added 12 kills. Outside hitter Connor Hughes had eight kills, nine digs and five block assists. Middle blocker Scott Kevorken recorded seven kills and seven blocks and middle blocker Collin Mehring totaled seven kills and five total blocks. Libero Michael Brinkley topped the squad with 11 digs and setter Daniel Stork had 47 set assists and six digs.
The Cardinal won its 12th straight match and advance to play Pepperdine in the MPSF semifinals.

Beach Invitational
NORWALK — UC Irvine senior Lacey Surak won the javelin throw Saturday at Cerritos College with a career-best mark of 166 feet.
Surak is closing in on the school record of 167-2, set by Laura Mills in 1985.
UCI freshman Megan George was third in the 100-meter hurdles in 14.00 and teammate Megan Benson was eighth in 14.44. George was also fifth in the 100 hurdles invitational race, in 14.26.
Kaulyn Lee-McNeill was fifth in the 400 hurdles in 1:00.58, and Itos Aikhionbare was fifth in the discus throw with a mark of 167-11.

NORWALK — UC Irvine freshman Isaiah Thompson was second in the 1500-meter race Saturday at Cerritos College.
Thompson ran a career-best time of 3:47.53. Freshman Lloyd Sicard placed fifth in the 110-meter hurdles in 14.68 seconds.
Stephen Brown was fifth in the pole vault with a mark of 16-0, while Mason Miller was sixth in the shot put at 55-8 1/4.
