Edison squared its Sunset record (1-1) Tuesday by taking a 2-0 halftime lead on host Newport Harbor and turning that advantage into a 3-2 victory over the Sailors (0-2). Sophomore Amanda Erickson scored both first-half goals, and senior captain Mackenzie Cerda scored 10 minutes into the second half, five minutes after Newport Harbor had scored to trim the Edison lead to 2-1.

Freshman goalie Zoe Clevely had two saves.

“Our young squad continues to gain experience,” Edison Coach Kerry Crooks said.

In the other Sunset match Tuesday, Marina and visiting Los Alamitos battled to a scoreless tie.

Vikings Coach Rafael Llorente said his team, now 1-0-1 in league, turned in a “strong defensive performance.”

Marina had defeated Edison, 2-1, getting two goals from Kayla Perry, on the opening day of league play Jan. 9. In other Jan. 9 openers, Laura Lainson and Sawyer Koelsh scored for Huntington, which shut down visiting Newport Harbor, 2-0, and Kasey Reeve and Valerie Holler scored for Fountain Valley, which got past host Los Alamitos, 2-1.

“We played soft and struggled adjusting to the kick-ball style that Loara plays,” Ocean View Coach David Deaton said. “Once we started the second half and played our game, we dominated play.”

In Sunset League action at 5 p.m. Thursday, Edison hosts Los Alamitos, Huntington is home to Marina and Fountain Valley travels to face Newport Harbor. In Golden West League play Thursday, Ocean View hosts Santa Ana at 3 p.m.

Ocean View, which this week took over the No. 1 spot in the CIF Southern Section Division 7 rankings, started its Golden West League season Tuesday and sprinted past visiting Loara, 19-4.

In Sunset League openers Jan. 8, Huntington Beach rolled past Fountain Valley, 17-2, Edison fell, 3-1, to Newport Harbor, and Marina lost, 21-3, to Los Alamitos.

Delaney Cleveland scored for Edison, the seventh-ranked team in CIF Southern Section Division 1, which lost a defensive battle against fourth-ranked Newport Harbor. Josette Santos had 10 saves for the Chargers.

The Chargers, who trailed, 1-0, at the half, played the game without team captain Natalie May, a sprinter and anchor on defense who was on a Model UN trip with the school in Europe, Edison Coach Diggy Riley said.

“Our girls were prepared, not just from game film we watched, but mentally as well,” Edison Coach Diggy Riley said. “There was no doubt in their minds they could beat Newport and they played like it, especially on the defensive end. Our offense started getting some good looks in the third quarter and if it wasn’t for some miraculous saves by their goalie, we would have won this game.

“I am so proud of these girls and how hard they are training and it is showing in the games.”

Edison bounced back Saturday in a nonleague road game against Irvine and scored a 6-5 nonleague victory. Cleveland and Sabrina Jensen each scored twice, and Bree Marmion and Lyndsie Williams each scored once.

Kendyl Riley scored twice for Marina in its loss to fifth-ranked Los Alamitos.
