High School Roundup: CdM splits final two games in tourney

GIRLS’ SOCCER

North Orange County Classic

CORONA — Corona del Mar High split its final two games of the touranment Saturday. The Sea Kings played Fountain Valley to a scoreless tie before losing in penalty kicks, 5-4. CdM then defeated Valencia, 3-1, in a consolation game at Santiago High.

Hunter Gantos, Maddy Roberts and Birkley Sigband scored in the latter game for CdM (4-3-3). Miranda Stiver and Roberts had assists. Senior keeper Kendall Mulvaney made eight combined saves in the two games.

CdM returns to action Jan. 9, when it hosts Irvine in the Pacific Coast League opener.

North Orange County Classic

LA HABRA — Sage Hill made the “red” division championship game before falling to Bellflower, 1-0, on Saturday at Sonora High.

Lauren Thunen had three saves in the championship for Sage Hill (4-4-2). Earlier Saturday, the Lightning defeated Sonora, 2-1, behind goals from Marina Wild and Meg Crade. Thunen had four saves.

Sage Hill won its first two games of the tournament Friday, defeating Rancho Alamitos, 2-0, and Southeast, 8-2. Allie Mowrey and Juliette Singarella scored against Rancho Alamitos. Crade had three goals against Southeast, Rachael Jaffe and Singarella added two, and Wild also scored. Alejandra Garcia had two saves for the Lightning.

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL

Corona del Mar 56, Nogales 15

CHINO HILLS — Maria King had 13 points and eight rebounds in the Ayala tournament consolation game Saturday at Ayala High.

Natalia Bruening had 12 points and seven rebounds, while Keaton Gaughan also chipped in 12 points for CdM (8-4).

CdM also lost its tournament opener Friday to Cajon, 60-43. Bruening had 12 points, 13 rebounds and three blocks, and Krista Anderson had 11 points and 10 rebounds.

CdM plays Workman in the tournament consolation semifinals Monday at 4:30 p.m.
