OCC Football: Six Pirates lauded
Freshman receiver D.J. McFadden and freshman tailback Lorenzo Williams are among six Orange Coast College football players named second-team All-Southern Conference.
McFadden led the team with 36 receptions in 10 games for 774 yards and eight touchdowns. He averaged 21.5 yards per catch and his eight touchdowns represented just more than one-third of the Pirates’ total of 23.
Williams carried 149 times for 720 yards and four touchdowns. He also caught 26 passes, second-most on the team, for 206 yards and two touchdowns. He completed his only pass for a 73-yard touchdown and also returned 14 kickoffs for an average of 21.9 yards.
Williams accounted for 74.5% of the Pirates’ 967 rushing yards.
McFadden and Williams were joined on the second-team offense by sophomore offensive tackle Taylor Evans. The 6-foot-4, 284-pound Evans helped OCC finish fourth in the seven-team conference in total offense (388.3 yards per game). The Pirates (3-7, 1-5 in conference, ranked third in passing and sixth in rushing among conference schools.
Sophomore Jason Kollock, a 5-11, 205-pound safety, who shared the team lead with 72 tackles, was joined on the second-team defense by sophomore linebacker Frank Chambers and freshman return specialist Treydonte Hill.
Kollock had 1.5 sacks and broke up five passes, while registering four tackles for loss.
The 6-3, 230-pound Chambers made 38 tackles, including 1.5 for loss.
Hill returned 12 kickoffs for 348 yards, an average of 29. His longest was 54 yards. He also caught 25 passes, third-most on the team, for 296 yards.
Fullerton sophomore quarterback Jose Escobar was the Offensive Player of the Year and Golden West sophomore linebacker Anthony McNichols was the Defensive Player of the Year.
Tim Byrns, who guided Fullerton to the conference title and a berth in the state title game, was named Coach of the Year.
