Youth Scene: Lightning takes second
The Newport Lightning Basketball Club’s 10U/Fourth-Grade Boys’ Team placed second in last weekend’s Focus Fall Invitational Showcase at the MAP Facility in Garden Grove.
The NLBC went 2-1 in pool play before facing a solid team from Chatsworth, Dune Citi.
The NLBC lost by five in the finals, showing great determination coming back from a 19-point deficit in the final six minutes of play.
The NLBC were led by Sanjay Tewari, Travis O’Neil, Michael Gurka, Aden Stein and Ayden Ziegler in scoring, while Conor Kelly, Jordan Stucki, Carter Healy, Brendan Jennings, Dylan Li and Anthony Marinelli led the team in rebounding and steals.

TH Hoops kicks off season
TH Hoops kicked off its fall basketball season at the Costa Mesa Downtown Recreation Center Saturday.
In the K-2 grade division, the Wildcats defeated the Bluedevils, 16-14 behind the leadership of Durham Pelinka with six points, Jordan Spigarell, Eden Madriagai, Samuel Hatch and Jasmine Becerra all played key roles in the win.
The Bluedevils were led by Evan Kriststansan’s passing that resulted in six points for Waylon Pipia, who slides and dives all over the floor in support of his teammates. Kate Jennis provided leadership by directing her teammates where to go. Owen Connell contibuted with two points and Gabriel Rojo also played very hard for the Bluedevil team.
The third through sixth-grade division saw doubleheader action. In the early game, the Gators (1-0) defeated the Tar Heels (0-1), 29-25. The Gators were led by Mathys Djombys’ eight points, three assists and three steals.
The Tar Heels were led by Alex Jennis’ 13 points. Gaven Rutledge added eight points for the Gators.
In the late game, the Bruins (1-0) battled to a 40-35 victory over the Tar Heels (0-2). The Bruins were led by Ben Sparks’ 23 points, three blocks and three assists. The Tar Heels were led by Alex Jennis’ eight points and Emily Elliott’s 13 rebounds. Glen Atkins had a double-double for the Bruins with 12 points and 11 rebounds.
