Briefs: Cairns leads way
Ian Cairns of Laguna Beach is leading the first PacSun USA Longboard Team in competition as its head coach this week at the ISA World Longboard Championships at Huanchaco, Peru.
The team consists of returning ISA World Team members Tony Silvagni (Carolina Beach, N.C.) and Taylor Jensen (Oceanside) who were joined by winners at the Surfing America USA Championships at Church, San Onofre State Beach, in June. The team consists of Silvagni and Jensen in the Open Men division, Rachael Tilly (Capistrano Beach) in the Women’s division, and Nick Anderberg (Cardiff-by-the-Sea) in the Junior division.
“Tony [Silvagni] and Taylor [Jensen] are proven world champions and our new talent, Rachael [Tilly] and Nick [Anderberg], are excited for the opportunity to show their significant skills on the world stage,” Cairns said in a statement. “We are looking forward to the opportunity of bringing home a gold medal.”
The Surfing America Program includes regional member organizations Atlantic Surfing Federation, Eastern Surfing Assn., Hawaiian Surfing Assn., National Scholastic Surfing Assn. and Western Surfing Assn.
Cairns, a former surfing World Champion, became the head coach of Surfing American in 2009.

Final AVP stop coming to HB
The seventh and final stop on the 2013 Assn. of Volleyball Professionals Pro Beach Volleyball Tour will be in Huntington Beach Huntington Beach Oct. 18-20.
The next AVP open tournament starts Friday and runs through Sunday at Santa Barbara. In the women’ tournament, the teams of Jennifer Kessy (Laguna Beach)/April Ross (Costa Mesa), and Whitney Pavlik (Laguna Beach)/Kerri Walsh Jennings (Manhattan Beach), are among the top three teams vying for the title.
Kessy and Ross have won two previous tour events (Salt Lake City Open; DO AC Pro Beach Volleyball Invitational at Atlantic City, N.J.), and Pavlik/Walsh Jennings have won one tournament (Manhattan Beach Open).
