Volleyball: Local trio shines
Former UC Irvine All-American Carson Clark, Newport Harbor High product Kyle Caldwell and former UCI All-American David Smith helped the U.S. men’s national volleyball team defeat Bulgaria, 25-19, 25-22, 25-21, in World League play on Friday at the Reno Events Center in Nevada.
Clark, an opposite, scored 11 points with nine kills and a .500 hitting efficiency rating, while Caldwell, a 6-foot-9 setter out of UCLA, had four stuff blocks.
Smith scored four points with two kills and two blocks.

Burnham advances
Newport Harbor High product Kirby Burnham, who is teaming with Meg Norton to represent the United States, went undefeated in pool play on Saturday at the Ontario Volleyball Assn. Grand Slam beach volleyball event in Ashbridges Bay, Ontario, Canada.
The 6-foot-2 Burnham, who while representing USC won the American Volleyball Coaches Assn. national collegiate sand volleyball title recently, will open in the single-elimination playoffs in the quarterfinals on Sunday.
