Almquist retires from CdM wrestling coaching post
Gary Almquist has stepped down as Corona del Mar High’s wrestling coach, said Seth Seneca, one of Almquist’s assistants this past season.
Almquist was in charge of the Sea Kings for 17 seasons. Seneca said Almquist informed the team of his decision to retire this week.
“Well from what I can make of it, he’s been doing it a long time and he would like to lighten the load and stress before retiring [from teaching] completely,” Seneca said via Facebook, as to why Almquist resigned.
Seneca said he plans to return next season as an assistant at CdM. Seneca also runs the CdM Middle School wrestling program.
“Gary said he will be a part of the early stages of the screening process so I’m sure he will help select a good fit,” Seneca said.
