High School Roundup: Newport Harbor wrestling takes 2nd at tournament

Battle by the Bay tournament

CORONA DEL MAR — Newport Harbor went 5-1 in the two-day event, falling, 37-30, to Godinez in the championship final on Saturday at Corona del Mar High.

Senior Larson Harley (152 pounds) and junior Ryan Taormina (145) both went 6-0 in the two-day tournament for the Sailors.

Senior Connor Moore (195 pounds), senior Mason Murphy (171) and junior Roberto Rivera (270) were all 5-1 for Newport Harbor.

Corona del Mar High juniors Kaiden Ebbinga and Adam Raines both went 7-0, while senior teammate Paul Nguyen was 5-0 in the tournament.

Junior Chris Croxton and freshman Chris Camarillo were both 6-1 to help Corona del Mar win three of its seven team dual matches.

GIRLS’ SOCCER

Westminster Tournament

WESTMINSTER — Sage Hill School defeated Saddleback Valley Christian, 5-0, and advanced on penalty kicks after playing Saddleback to a 1-1 tie on Saturday at Westminster High.

Juliette Singarella had the game-winning goal against Saddleback Valley Christian, with an assist from Claire Novotny.

Against Saddleback, Meg Crade converted an assist from Tiffany Taylor for the Lightning.

Sage improves to 4-0-1.

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL

Newport Harbor 48, Calvary Chapel 19

IRVINE — Freshman McKenna Izzi had 15 points to lead the Sailors in a consolation game of the Corona del Mar Tip-Off Classic on Saturday at Northwood High.

Junior Bela Raimondi had nine points, while junior Madison Morris (eight), junior Elizabeth Kremer (seven) and senior Halle McClain (six) also contributed for the Sailors (1-3).

Newport Harbor plays at Loara in the first round of the Loara Tournament on Wednesday night at 7:30.

Tesoro 58, Corona del Mar 43

IRVINE — Junior Katie Scott had 11 points for the Sea Kings in the third-place game of the Corona del Mar Tip-Off Classic at Northwood High on Saturday.

Freshman Kelly Tam had eight points and sophomore Katie Posert added seven for CdM (2-2).

CdM returns to action Friday at Mission Hills in San Diego.

Northwood 58, Estancia 54

IRVINE — Senior Celia Duran had 14 points, eight assists and five rebounds for the Eagles in the consolation final of the Corona del Mar Tip-Off Classic on Saturday at Northwood High.

Freshman sisters Maya and Neffertiti Van Den Heever had 18 and 10 points, respectively, for the Eagles (2-2).

Ginna Jason had 10 rebounds for the Eagles, who play against Magnolia in the Loara tournament on Monday at 7:30 p.m. at Loara High.

Pomona 66, Estancia 39

GARDEN GROVE — Junior Josh Mendoza had 17 points and senior Ben Beck added 12 for Estancia in the fifth-place game of the Orangewood Academy Tournament at Orangewood Academy on Saturday.

Estancia is 1-3.

BOYS’ BASKETBALL

Santiago 56, Costa Mesa 55

SANTA ANA — Daniel Azurian and Sean Comer (six rebounds) scored 17 points for the Mustangs in a consolation game of the Godinez tournament Saturday.

Andrew Wright had 12 points and Noah JeyaRajah had five rebounds for Costa Mesa (1-4).
