Youth Scene: CdM Waves take tourney title

The Corona del Mar Waves, a local girls’ under-14 team won the OC Classic Soccer Tournament on Sunday.

The team went undefeated in the tournament and won the title game, 4-1, over Diamond Bar.

The girls were made up of mostly Corona del Mar Middle School and Mariners students.

The championship team featured: Anna Hartog, Breena Foigelman, Elizabeth McKenzie, Emma Scott, Erika Wall, Fiona Palitz, Haley Hopkins, Hunter Gantos, Katie McCabe, Katherine Casey, Maddy Devarian, Sarah Lawson, Sierra Muhlhauser, Sina Schwenk-Mueller and Taylor Rosen.

The team was coached by Dave Scott and Dave Hopkins.

Newport team completes undefeated season

A Newport U10 boys’ team won the OC Classic after going undefeated in the regular season.

The team used an all-around effort to score a 5-2 win over Costa Mesa in the final.

The team received great contributions from Jack Starnes, Ty Burgess, Taegan Choi, Kori Griscom, Jax Richards, Cooper Simpson, Bennett Cox, Will Debassio, Caden Garrido and Dylan Hillson.

Coach Ted Bandaruk gets ‘Crushed’ at his 37th and final Aquaman event

Ted Bandaruk, Harbor View Swim Team’s esteemed head coach for the past 37 years will be stepping down at the end of the season.

You could hear the excitement in Coach Ted’s voice as he prepared his swimmers for Aquaman, the first meet of the year.

Aquaman is HVST’s intra-squad meet where members swim against their teammates to determine a baseline for their best times in each stroke. It’s also a chance for teammates new and old to get their competitive juices flowing in a meet-like atmosphere.

While this was the first meet for some of the younger swimmers, Colton Quick set a HVST record in the boys’ 7-8 age division with a time of 14.45 seconds in the 25-yard freestyle.

After the final heat was finished, Coach Ted was doused in Orange Crush soda, a tradition which started when he took over the team 37 years ago. When Coach Ted started, the team was wearing orange bathing suits. Coach Ted wanted to change but the parents liked those orange suits. So Coach Ted got the team chanting “We are Orange Crush,” over and over. That team of 50 original swimmers has now grown to a team of more than 300 under Coach Ted’s direction.

HVST has been working very hard for the last two months to send Coach Ted off with a successful season.

The first meet is against Lake Forest on June 2 at Lake Forest’s pool.
