High School Roundup: Mesa’s Le and Nguyen win league doubles title

BOYS’ TENNIS

Orange Coast League finals

LAGUNA BEACH — Costa Mesa High’s Tam Le and Max Nguyen won the doubles title after beating Laguna Beach’s Casey Kimball and Andrew Koumas, 6-3, 6-1, Thursday.

The Mustangs’ Michael Chantos finished third in singles after beating Hector Jimenez of Godinez, 6-3, 5-7, 11-9.

Estancia’s Erik Cerros and Matt Thomas finished fourth in doubles after losing to Matt Meisberger and Jared Boetes of Laguna Beach, 6-0, 0-6, 10-7.

The Breakers had two players in the singles final. Teague Hamilton beat Morgan Lebby, 6-1, 6-2 to win the singles title.

CIF Individuals begin May 18.

Pacific Coast League finals

IRVINE — Corona del Mar High’s Henry Gordon and Alex Murray advance to the CIF Individuals.

The duo finished second after losing to University’s Ryo Shimizu and Drew Dawson, 8-2, at Woodbridge High.

CdM’s Alec Adamson and Carson Williams lost to Dawson and Shimizu in the semifinals, 6-4, 1-6, 7-5.

Gage Brymer of University won the singles title defeating teammate Stefan Menichella 8-3 in the final.

Academy League finals

NEWPORT BEACH — Crean Lutheran’s Nikolas Ramadan capped a perfect 40-0 season by winning the singles title with a three-set win over Sage Hill Robbe Simon in the final.

Whitney’s Gabe Cupubi and Alex Pham, the No. 4 seed, upset top-seeded Andrew Torak and Brook Robinson of St. Margaret’s, 7-5, 6-0, to reach the final. They also upset the No. 2 seed, Alex Manolakas and Eric Magniarditi, of Sage Hill, in the final, 6-4, 4-6, 6-4.

Sunset League finals

NEWPORT BEACH — Newport Harbor High’s Reese Stalder, the No. 3 seed, finished fourth after losing to No. 4 Fountain Valley’s Winston Nguyen, 6-3, 4-6, 10-8, Thursday at Newport Harbor.

Stalder lost to No. 2 Cameron Marco in the semifinals, 3-6, 7-5, 10-8, in the semifinals.

BOYS’ SWIMMING

Orange Coast League finals

COSTA MESA — Costa Mesa senior James Lewis repeated as 200-yard freestyle champion Thursday at Costa Mesa High.

Lewis won the 200 free in 1:49.86 and was second in the 500 free (4:58.37). Both times are CIF Southern Section Division 3 automatic times.

Costa Mesa finished second in league behind Laguna Beach. Estancia was fifth.

Mustangs sophomore Tyler Connors won the 200 IM in 2:06.60 and was second in the 100 back (56.95), both CIF auto times. Sophomore Mason Cooper won the 100 free in 49.72, another CIF auto time, and was second in the 50 free (22.75).

The Mustangs’ 200 medley relay (1:51.15), 200 free relay (1:34.98) and 400 free relay (3:25.15) teams all finished second.

GIRLS’ SWIMMING

Orange Coast League finals

COSTA MESA — Costa Mesa High junior Kellie Thorsness broke two league meet and school records Thursday at Costa Mesa High.

Thorsness won the 50-yard freestyle in 24.74 seconds, lowering her own 24.96 mark from earlier this year. She also set the league and school record in the 100 free, touching in 54.22. The previous school record was a 54.78 by Erin Bayes in 2001.

Costa Mesa finished second at league finals, behind Laguna Beach.

BOYS’ TRACK & FIELD

Sunset League finals

HUNTINGTON BEACH — UC Berkeley-bound senior Ethan Cochran won the discus and shot put and led a Newport Harbor 1-2-3 sweep in both events Thursday at Huntington Beach High.

Cochran won the discus event with a mark of 197 feet, 6 inches. Steve Michaelsen came in second (184-8) and Marty Taylor was third (167-6).

Cochran’s mark in the shot put was 62-6 1/4. Michalesen was second (56-3 ½) and Taylor third (54-3 ½).

Fritz Howser was the league champ in the pole vault (15-1).

Jake Barber took second place in the 3,200 in 9 minutes, 33.77 seconds.

Titus Hasson finished third in the 200 meters in 22.18 seconds.

They all qualified for the CIF Southern Section Division 2 preliminaries May 12 at Moorpark High.

••BOYS’ LACROSSE

Foothill 6, Newport Harbor 4

SANTA ANA — The No. 12-seeded Sailors’ season ended in the quarterfinals of the U.S. Lacrosse Southern Section South Division playoffs Thursday.

The game saw four ties and four lead changes, and wasn’t decided until the final seconds of the fourth quarter.

Foothill, the No. 4 seed, advances to play against Corona del Mar on Saturday.

Goalie Zac Vayda registered 14 saves and also had six takeaways, a knockdown, and a groundball for Newport Harbor (10-9).

Foothill put a man on shadow pressure defense to effectively limit the Sailors top scorer Riley Robinson (39 goals, 15 assists for the season). Senior captains Jack Murrel (four takeaways, four groundballs) and Andrew Wilson (five takeaways, two knockdowns, one groundball) closed out their stellar careers.

Other significant contributions were made by Riley Peterson (7-3 on faceoffs, two takeaways, one groundball), Brandon Rausch (four groundballs), Matt Porteous (two groundballs, one takeaway), and Hamilton Randle (two knockdowns, one groundball).

GIRLS’ TRACK & FIELD

Sunset League finals

HUNTINGTON BEACH — Newport Harbor’s Paige Tennison took second place in the 3,200 meters in 10 minutes, 48.23 seconds Thursday at Huntington Beach High.

Peri Howser was third in the pole vault (10-8).

Both qualified for the CIF Southern Section Division 2 preliminaries May 12 at Moorpark High.

Paloma Lamas was fourth in the shot put (30-8).

BOYS’ GOLF

Sunset League finals

MIRA LOMA — Newport Harbor High’s Carter Norris finished tied for seventh to advance to CIF play after shooting even-par 71 Thursday at Goose Creek Golf Club.

Norris shot 76 Wednesday. He’ll play in the CIF Individual regionals on May 14 at Skylinks Golf Course in Long Beach.

John Lee of Los Alamitos won the league title with a 75-65—140.

Brad Tapfer (70-78—148) finished tied for ninth and won a playoff to earn an alternate spot for CIF.

Danny Willett shot 75-76—151, ending his season.
