IRVINE — Crosby Slaught and Race Parmenter combined for UCI’s fifth shutout this season to help the Anteaters win the Big West Conference series Saturday.

Slaught allowed one hit in seven innings and struck out four while walking three. The senior, who improved to 5-4 on the year, now has 21 career victories and moves into a tie for 11th in the UCI records. Slaught shares the spot with current undergraduate assistant Brett Smith (2002-04) and Jerry Maras (1972-75). Parmenter entered in the top of the eighth and dealt two innings of one-hit relief to earn his fifth save.

Tommy Reyes went three for four with two doubles and two runs scored.

The series concludes Sunday at 1 p.m.

WOMEN’S WATER POLO

UC Irvine 8, Cal State Northridge 3

DAVIS — The top-seeded Anteaters advanced to the Big West Conference Tournament final after beating the fourth-seeded Matadors Saturday.

Jessy Cardey scored three goals to lead sixth-ranked UCI (23-6) and now has 62 this season.

Goalkeeper Jillian Yocum stopped nine shots on the game, and was especially instrumental in the first half where she picked up six of her saves.

UCI heads to its fourth straight Big West Tournament final Sunday for a 2 p.m. match against No. 10 UC Davis. UCI defeated the Aggies in their only meeting this season, 10-4.

MEN’S TRACK & FIELD

Steve Scott Invitational

IRVINE — UC Irvine senior Brett Matejka ran a career-best time in the 3,000-meter steeplechase Saturday night.

Matejka finished third in the race with a time of 9:13.26, shaving 11 seconds off his previous best time.

Steven Melena placed fourth in the 5,000 meters with a time of 14:34.77, also a career-best for the UCI sophomore.

IRVINE — UC Irvine freshman Rosa Serna finished second in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 111:48.85 and Jewelz Andrews, another freshman, was third in 11:53.31.

Freshman Lacey Surak placed sixth in the javelin throw with a mark of 127-8 and junior Chelsea Pham was eighth at 125-1.
