Newport-Mesa displays perfect start
The Newport-Mesa Tar Heels All-Net fifth-grade boys’ team started the season off with a bang going 4-0 last weekend in two separate shootouts.
The Tar Heels beat Basketball U Blue and Basketball U Orange on Saturday and then swept El Toro and Rock Solid on Sunday.
The Tar Heels were led by the stellar play of guards Nico Dasca, Ethan Barnes and Luke Chelf, while centers Johnny King and DJ Rodman manned the paint and led the team in rebounding.
Adam Flood, Mason Melcer, Sam Barela and Matt Olson played multiple positions and hit big shots throughout the weekend.
Dasca led the team in scoring, while Barnes led the team in steals.
Guard Jake Hamilton is out with an injury for a few weeks.
The Tar Heels are coached by Scott Stucki and start the regular season on Sunday.
